Interview with Totally Flocked Avian Rescue: “No Bird Left Behind”

At Alex’s Bird Kingdom, we love to shine a light on those making a real difference in the avian world.

We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Jeanette Eriksen, founder of Totally Flocked Avian Rescue, a non-profit dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and providing a safe haven for parrots in need.

Their mission? To give these incredible birds a second chance at life, happiness, and flight.

A Heartfelt Mission

Totally Flocked Avian Rescue is more than just a safe space for parrots—it's a lifeline. Their motto, “No Bird Left Behind,” truly says it all. They’re not just about saving lives but fully rehabilitating parrots emotionally, physically, and socially.

We believe every parrot deserves a fulfilling life, free from neglect and cruelty,” says Jeanette. “Our work focuses on transforming the lives of these intelligent creatures, one bird at a time.

Where It All Began

The story behind the rescue started decades ago with a little girl and her first two parakeets.

Fast forward 30-plus years, and Jeanette, now an experienced Animal Cruelty Investigator, discovered just how deeply parrots needed help. After working on their first bird cruelty case, they knew they had to do more. With many shelters unequipped to handle exotic birds, Totally Flocked became a much-needed haven for parrots who had nowhere else to turn.

I adopted two parrots from my first cruelty case, and they’re still with me today, living their best lives,” Jeanette shared.

The Birds They Rescue

Totally Flocked Avian Rescue takes in a variety of exotic bird species, from macaws and cockatoos to finches and everything in between.

However, large cockatoos and macaws often make up the majority of the rescues. Due to their size, loud calls, and sometimes destructive habits, they’re frequently rehomed or, sadly, neglected.

These larger species are often misunderstood and need special care, which many owners can’t handle. That’s where we come in,” she explained.

A Rescue Story that Stole Their Heart

One rescue story that left a lasting impact involved a heartbreaking hoarding situation. A few birds were rescued from unimaginable conditions—living among piles of trash and excrement alongside many other animals.

One macaw was trapped in a cage wired shut, while another macaw was barely surviving in a cage filled with feces over a foot tall. Worst of all, a poor African Grey was left in a tiny, upside-down dog crate.

But the story didn’t end there. After securing the three birds, Jeanette made a shocking discovery—a hidden African Grey that everyone thought had died two weeks prior.

Dehydrated and starving, this little Grey clung to life. During the 2.5-hour drive back to the rescue, she clung to the carrier bars, feeling the fresh air for possibly the first time in weeks.

It was from this very moment that the rescue’s motto, “No Bird Left Behind,” was born.

The Challenges of Bird Rescue

Running a rescue comes with many challenges, and Totally Flocked Avian Rescue faces them head-on. The high cost of food, medical care, toys, and specialized enclosures is a constant pressure.

Many of the parrots arrive with complex health and behavioral issues, requiring extensive time, care, and resources.

It’s not just physical rehabilitation; it’s emotional. These birds have been through so much, and it’s hard not to be affected,” says the founder.

Finding volunteers is also a struggle, as caring for parrots requires time, patience, and experience. Despite this, Jeanette Eriksen continues to give their all, handling each bird daily, with only a little help from a close family friend.

A Success Story to Warm Your Heart

One of the happiest stories involves the African Grey rescued from that upside-down dog crate. After months of trust-building, the bird slowly began to open up.

A couple came to meet him, and though the wife had her heart set on adopting him, the bird chose the husband instead! Now, the once-cautious Grey is living his best life, snuggled up on his new owner's chest, soaking up all the love and attention.

Educating the Public on Parrot Care

Totally Flocked Avian Rescue is passionate about educating potential bird owners before they even think about bringing a parrot into their home. Birds, especially parrots, are a huge commitment, and it’s important to understand the time, cleaning, noise, and special care they require.

I’d rather educate someone before they adopt, so they know exactly what they’re getting into,” the founder explained.

Looking Ahead: Future Goals

Totally Flocked Avian Rescue dreams of building outdoor aviaries where the parrots can enjoy fresh air, sunlight, and a safe space to spread their wings.

These aviaries would be a sanctuary for parrots who have endured neglect and abuse, offering them the freedom to fly, explore, and play. This dream would also include a quarantine area for new birds entering the rescue, ensuring their health and safety before joining the flock.

How You Can Help

Running a rescue is no small task, and Totally Flocked Avian Rescue is always grateful for support. Donations of food, toys, or financial help are vital to keep their mission going strong.

Every little bit helps. Whether it’s donations or simply spreading the word, we can’t do this without our community’s support,” says Jeanette Eriksen.

Totally Flocked Avian Rescue is truly a labor of love, giving these beautiful creatures a second chance at life.
