Rescuing Birds and Raising Awareness: An Interview with Sierra Avian Advocacy and Services
Bird rescue work is often filled with heartwarming moments, tough challenges, and inspiring transformations. Sierra Avian Advocacy and Services is one such organization dedicated to providing second chances to birds in need. We had the pleasure of speaking with them about their journey, challenges, and the birds who have left a lasting impact.
The Beginning of a Mission
The founder's passion for bird rescue began unexpectedly when they encountered a sick Green Cheek Conure at a pet store. Despite the store's assurances that the bird was fine, it was evident that something was seriously wrong. The little conure, named Cannon, was taken home and given immediate care. Sadly, he passed away before he could receive proper medical treatment. This heartbreaking experience highlighted the misinformation and lack of proper bird care in the industry, sparking a lifelong mission to educate others and provide sanctuary to birds in need.
Birds Most in Need
The rescue commonly receives surrender requests for Green Cheek Conures, Parakeets, and Cockatoos. Many of these birds were originally purchased from local pet stores, only for their owners to later realize they were unprepared for the commitment involved.
A Story That Left a Mark
Every rescue has a unique story, but one particularly special case is Maui, a 25+ year-old Umbrella Cockatoo. Initially, Maui was permanently boarded at a bird store after his owner was no longer able to care for him. Described as fearful of men and difficult to handle, Maui arrived stressed and withdrawn. However, with patience and love, he transformed into one of the sweetest and most affectionate birds. Despite his initial fear, he now adores his rescuer’s husband, proving that with time and care, even the most traumatized birds can find trust and happiness again.
Challenges in Bird Rescue
One of the toughest aspects of running a bird rescue is knowing that not every bird can be saved. Limited funding, space, and differing opinions on bird care make rescue work difficult. However, the organization remains committed to doing everything possible to help as many birds as they can.
A Different Approach to Adoption
As a newly established rescue, Sierra Avian Advocacy and Services has not yet adopted out any birds since its founding in July 2024.
Their rigorous adoption process includes interviews, background checks, and strict requirements, such as non-smoking homes.
Ensuring that birds go to truly suitable homes is a top priority.
Some birds, like Riptide, a sensitive Galah Cockatoo, have been deemed better suited for permanent sanctuary care rather than adoption.
Community Outreach and Education
Educating the public is a key part of their mission. The rescue participates in community events, distributes educational flyers, and works to dispel common myths about bird care, diet, and enrichment. By spreading awareness, they hope to prevent more birds from ending up in need of rescue.

Future Goals for the Rescue
The rescue’s long-term vision includes expanding to a commercial facility that can house over a hundred birds, offering free training for bird owners, and providing low-cost veterinary care.
As the only bird rescue within a fifty-mile radius, the need for growth is urgent. In the meantime, they are working on launching a foster program to help more birds find safe and loving environments.
Advice for New Bird Owners
For those considering bringing a bird into their home, the best advice is to establish a relationship with an avian veterinarian before adoption. Knowing where to go for medical care, understanding costs, and preparing for emergencies are essential steps in responsible bird ownership. Many avian vet offices offer free resources, including diet recommendations and care sheets, to help new bird owners provide the best care possible.
