A Heartfelt Interview with Crystal Abshire of T&A Parrot Rescue and Sanctuary

We’re thrilled to introduce you to Crystal Abshire, the passionate founder of T&A Parrot Rescue and Sanctuary in Gerrardstown, WV. Crystal devoted her life to giving parrots a second chance at a safe and loving home, and she shared her story, her rescue journey, and her advice for future parrot adopters with us. Let’s dive in!

1. How It All Began: Crystal’s Love for Animals

Crystal’s always been an animal lover, and her journey with parrot rescue started when she noticed just how many parrots were in need of homes.

“Craigslist was packed with birds needing homes, and I started buying as many as I could to get them out of tough situations,” she recalls. “Then, a friend found an abandoned African grey in a house he was renovating, and that was the moment I realized there was a real need for a parrot rescue here.”

And so, T&A Parrot Rescue was born—a place where parrots in need can find comfort, care, and a second chance at a happier life.

2. A Rescue Home for All Kinds of Birds

At T&A, Crystal opens her doors to all kinds of parrots, from small budgies to large macaws. She often sees species like conures, African greys, and yellow-naped Amazons, though she occasionally takes in finches too. Doves and pigeons are off-limits due to allergies, and cockatoos are managed case-by-case.

“We’ve got a mix here,” she says, “and each bird has its own personality and needs. It keeps things interesting!”

3. A Day in the Life at T&A Parrot Rescue

Running a parrot rescue is a full-time job! Mornings start with a nutritious breakfast for the flock, featuring veggie chop, grains, and the occasional dried fruit and nut. As the birds enjoy cartoons, Crystal juggles their care with homeschooling her son.

Days are spent cleaning, feeding, and socializing the birds, with a major cleaning day on Thursday or Friday. Weekends are usually for welcoming new rescues or meeting with adopters.

4. The Stories That Stick with You

Some rescues are unforgettable. For Crystal, the most memorable moments often involve saving multiple birds at once.

“We once drove across West Virginia and into Ohio to rescue 13 parrots from two homes,” she says. “And recently, we took in a flock of 11 from Delaware. Some of these birds have gone through so much, but here, they finally get love, fresh food, and toys.”

For the older, more fragile birds, T&A becomes a forever sanctuary where they can live out their golden years peacefully.

5. The Highs and Lows of Rescue Work

Rescue work isn’t for the faint of heart.

“The hardest part is dealing with people,” Crystal shares. “You see so much neglect, and it’s painful to see birds in bad conditions. But when you meet people willing to learn and grow, that’s what keeps me going. Knowing I’m making a difference for these birds makes it all worthwhile.”

She spends a lot of time educating adopters, helping them understand the needs of their feathered friends so they can provide the best homes possible.

6. How You Can Help T&A Parrot Rescue

Crystal is always grateful for support! For those nearby, volunteering is a big help. Donations of food, toys, and supplies are also welcome, and T&A has wish lists on Amazon and Chewy for anyone wanting to send items directly. Twice a year, Crystal holds a shirt fundraiser to cover emergency vet expenses and other essentials.

“We try to make it easy for people to help however they can,” says Crystal. “Even sharing our posts or spreading the word makes a big difference!”

7. Thinking About Adopting a Parrot? Here’s Crystal’s Advice

Adopting a parrot is a lifelong commitment, and Crystal has some important advice for anyone considering it.

“Parrot ownership is a lifestyle,” she explains. “They’re not like cats or dogs—they don’t bond with everyone, and not all of them talk. Parrots need engagement, space to fly, and a family that’s truly prepared to commit.”

In other words, parrots need a family that’s ready to love and care for them as they are.

8. Looking Forward

What’s next for T&A Parrot Rescue? While there are no major expansion plans, Crystal remains committed to her rescue work, focusing on educating the community and making a positive impact in the lives of every bird she cares for.

“We’re staying humble, doing our best to help each bird that comes our way. “For now, it’s all about making a difference, one bird at a time.”

Crystal’s dedication to helping parrots is inspiring, and her rescue journey is a beautiful reminder of how much of a difference one person can make.

If you’re as inspired as we are, consider checking out T&A’s wish lists or volunteering—every little bit helps Crystal continue her amazing work with these beautiful birds!

Beautiful article about a beautiful soul. Crystal’s rescue is something to behold in person. She can give you details about every single bird in her care that can only come from spending one on time with each of them. They are very loved, healthy and well taken care of. She matched me with my first forever birds who thankfully accepted me. Her process of adoption is in place to ensure we carry on where she began with her birds. I’m forever grateful to have found her and will support her in any way I possibly can.
