Meet Cristal from Feathered Friends of Mobile: A Heartfelt Journey into Exotic Parrot Rescue
At Alex’s Bird Kingdom, we’re always excited to shine a spotlight on incredible individuals making a difference in the avian community. Recently, we had the pleasure of interviewing Cristal, the dedicated soul behind Feathered Friends of Mobile: Exotic Parrot Rescue and Sanctuary, based in Mobile, Alabama.
In this interview, Cristal shared her touching journey into bird rescue, the challenges she faces, and the profound love she has for her feathered friends.
1. Can you tell us a bit about your bird rescue and its mission?
Feathered Friends of Mobile is a small home-based rescue, rehabilitation, and sanctuary dedicated to providing love and care for unwanted, rehomed, and mistreated birds. We don’t judge or ask questions; we’re simply here to help feathered friends. My three children and I run the rescue, and while it’s financially challenging, our hearts are always full. We cover all expenses out of pocket, without relying on donations. Every bird we welcome is treated like family, and we’re passionate about creating a safe, nurturing environment for each one.
2. What motivated you to begin rescuing birds?
I’ve loved birds since I was 9 years old. Growing up in Puerto Rico, I had lovebirds as companions. After moving to Alabama in 2013, I began volunteering at the Birmingham Humane Society, where I gained experience working with all kinds of animals, including birds. The turning point came in 2019 when I met a friend who had been rescuing birds for over 40 years. Her passing in 2022 left me grieving, but I knew I had to continue her legacy. That’s when I started my own rescue, which has since grown with the support of over 10,000 followers.
3. Are there specific parrot species your rescue focuses on?
We don’t focus on any specific parrot species. From small parakeets to large macaws, we welcome all exotic birds in need. However, we don’t take in wildlife due to legal restrictions, but we forward injured wildlife to the appropriate centers for care.
4. Is there a particular rescue story that really stands out to you?
One story that always brings tears to my eyes is about an African Ring-neck we rescued from a motel. The manager found the bird abandoned in a room and had been trying to care for him with little knowledge of proper bird care. Despite our efforts, this sweet bird’s health declined, and we sadly lost him after four months. It was heartbreaking, but we did everything we could to make his last days as comfortable as possible.
5. What are some of the main challenges your rescue faces?
The biggest challenge is financial. Every bird we take in requires expensive vet care, medications, and special diets, and since we don’t rely on donations, we cover all costs ourselves. It can be stressful and draining, but we’re fortunate to have a supportive vet clinic that offers discounts when they can. My biggest fear is not having the funds to help a sick bird, but so far, we’ve managed.
6. Could you share a heartwarming success story about a bird’s rehabilitation and adoption?
One of my favorite success stories involves a senior Severe Macaw with medical issues. After months of working with her, she warmed up to us, despite her initial fear of women. She eventually found a loving home with a retired woman who offered the peace and quiet she needed. Knowing she’s now in a comfortable, loving environment brings me so much joy.
7. How do you help raise awareness about the importance of avian welfare?
We raise awareness by participating in community events, partnering with organizations, and using social media to educate people about avian welfare. We also work with educational institutions, like 4-H, to teach children about the care and responsibilities of owning exotic birds. It’s crucial to spread the message that birds are not just pets—they’re family members who deserve love and proper care.
8. How can individuals or businesses get involved and support your rescue efforts?
People can help by sharing our posts on social media, which helps us reach more people in need of rescue or support. We also offer foster opportunities for those who can temporarily care for birds, and we accept donations through our Amazon Wish List and partnerships with businesses like Christine’s Chop Shop and Alex’s Bird Kingdom. Donations of bird food, toys, or cages go a long way in helping us continue our work.
9. What are your hopes and goals for the future of your rescue?
My hope for the future is to grow our community support, with more volunteers and advocates spreading awareness about avian welfare. I dream of a future where every bird receives the respect, care, and protection they deserve. Too many birds end up in rescues because people don’t realize the commitment it takes to care for them. Birds aren’t just pets—they’re companions who rely on us as much as we rely on them.
10. Finally, any tips or advice for new parrot owners to keep their birds happy and healthy?
To all new parrot owners: ensure your bird has a varied diet that includes pellets, fresh fruits, and vegetables. Spend quality time with your bird—parrots thrive on companionship.
Always provide enrichment with toys and foraging activities, and never overlook regular vet visits.
Remember, owning a bird is a big responsibility, but it’s also incredibly rewarding when you create a loving, enriching environment for your feathered friend.
Cristal’s dedication to Feathered Friends of Mobile is truly inspiring, and we’re proud to support her rescue.
